DEFINITION AND KEY PURPOSE OF GARMENT SAMPLE

Garment Sample: Garment samples are essential prototypes created during the apparel production process. They serve as a bridge between the design concept and the final product, allowing designers, manufacturers, and buyers to evaluate the garment’s quality, fit, and overall appearance before mass production begins. [1]

Key Purpose of Garment Sample:

Design Validation: They help in verifying the design's feasibility, ensuring that the creative vision can be realistically produced.

Fit Assessment: Samples are crucial for checking the fit and comfort of a garment, allowing for adjustments to be made to achieve the desired fit across different sizes.

Quality Control: By examining the materials, construction, and finishing details, samples help in maintaining high quality standards.

Sales and Marketing: They are often used to showcase the final product to buyers and retailers, securing orders before full scale production.

TYPES OF SAMPLES MADE IN GARMENT INDUSTRY

Proto Sample/First Sample: The first sample that is developed from the design sketch or according to the buyer's specification is known as proto sample. Proto sample is also known as the first sample. This sample is normally made of matching fabric quality (weight and fabric types) and with available color. This sample is made in sample size. [2]

This sample helps designers to assess the feasibility and functionality of a design, making them essential for early stage evaluation. [3]

Fit sample: After approving proto sample, fit sample should be made by following buyer provided measurement sheet. The purpose of developing fit samples is to check the garment fit on the dress form or on the human model. The measurement specifications are verified using the fit sample and measurements are corrected as per fit requirement. Fit sample is developed after the proto sample and prior to size set sample. Fit sample can be made by using similar fabric, nearer GSM and in any color. [4]

Size set sample: The objective of the size set sample is checking the garment fit of multiple sizes. The size set samples are normally made for jump sizes like S, L, XXL. Pattern grading is checked in size set sample. Once the proto sample and fit sample are approved, based on the pattern of the approved sample the grading for the other sizes are done and then patterns for the other sizes will be made. Size set samples are made using actual fabric. In case actual fabric is not available, the similar quality fabric can be used. Here, it should be noted that, without the size set sample approval, cutting should not be started. [5]

Pre-Production sample: PP (Pre-Production) sample is made in garment factories prior to starting bulk production. PP sample is made in sample size. [6]

PP Sample is made with actual fabrics, trims and accessories and all the order specifications regarding measurements, print, embroidery, washes etc are followed. Factory can proceed with the bulk production when the PP sample is approved by buyer. [7]

Production sample: Factory starts bulk production after the PP sample approval. After the bulk production starts, a few garments are picked randomly from the production output and sent to buyer for approval. [8]

Production samples serve as a benchmark for quality control, ensuring that the entire production maintains the standards set by the pre-production samples. [9]

Photo Shoot Sample: The name of the sample clarifies. For capturing a photo for the catalogue and e-commerce sites photo shoot samples are made, and the photo is taken on model or dress form. [10]

Mockup sample: When any part of a garment is made for a particular purpose not the complete garment then it is called mockup sample. Example: A pocket of a pant or a leg of a pant etc. [11]

Shipment sample: Shipment sample is needed after completing final inspection i.e. when goods are ready for the shipment. It is a sample that reflects what buyers will receive. Buyer asks shipment sample to review the final product and its packing. The difference between the shipment sample and the other samples is that the shipment sample is in the form with all packing accessories, packed in the required form and will represent the product that the form in which the buyer will receive the goods. [12]

Salesman Sample (SMS): Salesman samples (SMS), are developed for displaying the design in the retail stores. The purpose of displaying samples in the store is to forecast the order volume. Salesman samples are also known as the marketing sample. [13]
